THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL r SATURDAY, MAY 22, 1920. PORTLAND, OREGON. " It will be a remarkable Whitsunday be cause for the first time to the his tory of the Christian religion, non liturgal churches will celebrate It on an elaborate scale. Whitsunday or Pentecost, one of the principal feasts of the Christian church, is celebrated on the fiftieth day after Easter to commemorate; the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples. FESTIVAL HIGH . 127 BANK The day has become one of the three baptismal days, the name Whitsunday now being: generally attributed to- the wMte garments formerly worn by the candidates for baptism on this feast. The festival is the third to importance of the great feasts of the church and the last of the annual- cycle commemorating (he Lord. It is connected with the Jew ish Pentecost, not only in the historical date of its origin, but in idea; the Jew ish festival is one of thanks for the first-fruits of- the earth, the Christian for the first-fruits of the Spirit. In the early church the name Pentecost was. given to the whole 50 days between Easter and Whitsunday, which were celebrated as a period of rejoicing. PASTING 18 INTRODtNCED The code of Theodoaius forbade theat rical performances and the games of the circus during the feast, j The custom of hallotving the days Immediatelysur roundlng the festival is comparEfrely late. The custom of (celebrating' the vigil by fasting has - also been intro duced. In the Church of England there are being-, special collects, gospels and epistles for Monday and Tuesday in Whitsun week. In the Lutheran churches two days only arebbserved. In the middle ages the Whitsun serv ices were marked by many curious cus toms. Among these are the letting down of a dove, from the roof into the church, the dropping of balls 6f fare, rose leaves and the like.
